What Ceiling Painting Actually Takes
The paint is the last hour of the job. Everything before it decides how the ceiling looks in two years.
Start with the room. Ceiling work throws fine spatter in every direction and gravity is not on your side, so the protection has to beat what a wall job needs. Furniture goes to the middle and gets covered, floors get canvas, and fixtures come down or get bagged. Ceiling fans, smoke alarms, and pot light trims come off so the cut around each opening is a clean circle.
Then the surface. Nail pops get set and filled, old fixture holes get patched, and the hairline crack that opens every winter at the wall line gets cut out and taped, not smeared over. Fresh compound is thirsty. It drinks that first coat faster than the surface around it, so an unprimed patch dries to a different sheen and shows as a pale ghost under the light. Every repair gets spot-primed.
Then the rolling. A ceiling is one uninterrupted surface with no doorway or corner to hide a stopping point, so you keep a wet edge right across it and roll back into paint that is still wet. A lap mark is just the line where wet paint met paint that had begun to set. A warm room or a porous patch dries that edge before you get back.
Older houses add a step. Canada did not limit lead in interior paint until 1976, so in any pre-1980 home the lower layers can hold lead. Sprayed texture and the joint compound in older ceilings can hold asbestos. Neither is a hazard sitting still. Both become one the moment somebody dry-sands them, which is why Ontario's asbestos regulation treats sanding that material as more than ordinary painting. Water Stains, Mould, and What Paint Cannot Fix
Most ceiling calls we take are not about colour. Something marked the ceiling and the owner wants it gone. There are three kinds of mark and they get three different answers.
A water stain is the record of a leak. The leak gets found and fixed and the ceiling gets properly dry before anyone opens a can. In a house that is usually the bathroom above, a supply line, or the roof. In a condo it is almost always the unit above or a shared pipe. In Ontario the corporation is responsible for common elements and standard unit elements, so the first call there is property management, not a painter.
Once it is dry, the stain gets sealed rather than covered. Ceiling paint on its own is not a barrier. A shellac or oil based blocker is the strongest option and stops water rings, rust, smoke, and nicotine cold. Water based blockers handle lighter marks with less smell, which matters in an occupied condo. The blocker goes on the mark, then two coats of flat over everything.
Mould is the one people get wrong. Health Canada says it plainly in its guide to moisture and mould indoors: painting a mouldy surface does not kill the mould and does not stop it growing back. The moisture goes first. On a bathroom ceiling that means a fan that moves real air, vented outside instead of into the attic, left running about half an hour after a shower. Attic-vented fans turn up constantly in older North York houses, and the ceiling under one never stays clean.
The third mark is film. Nicotine and kitchen grease leave a yellow-brown haze that dissolves in water, so it travels. Wash it down, dry it, then block it.

Nine Things Worth Knowing Before You Paint a Ceiling
- Flat finish hides waves. Shinier sheens light up every bump on old plaster. Real ceiling paint is made dead flat and heavier bodied, so it holds on the roller.
- Block stains first. Plain paint over a water mark bleeds back through within months. Seal the mark itself, then coat the whole ceiling.
- Fix the leak before you book the painter. A stain is a symptom, and a dry-looking patch is not always a dry patch.
- Cover everything below. Ceiling spatter travels much farther than wall work and lands on whatever you forgot to move.
- Cut in before rolling. Edges at the wall and at crown get brushed freehand. Tape follows the wall, and an old wall is rarely straight.
- Keep a wet edge and finish the plane in one go. Stop for lunch in the middle of a living room ceiling and you will see exactly where you stopped.
- Use an extension pole, not a ladder. Poles keep you moving fast enough to hold that wet edge.
- Prime every patch. Fresh compound drinks paint faster than the surface around it, so an unprimed repair shows as a different sheen under the pot lights.

Do you paint popcorn or stipple ceilings?
No. We do not take on popcorn ceiling work, including painting it. Sprayed texture from the 1960s and 1970s can contain asbestos. We paint flat and lightly textured plaster and drywall ceilings.
Can you get rid of the water stain on my ceiling?
Yes, once the leak is fixed and the ceiling is dry. The mark gets sealed with a stain-blocking primer, then the whole ceiling gets two coats of flat so the sheen matches.
The stain came back after it was painted. What went wrong?
Either the leak was never fixed, or the stain was painted over rather than sealed. Ordinary ceiling paint is not a barrier. Water and nicotine marks travel straight through it.
There is mould on my bathroom ceiling. Can you paint over it?
No, and nobody should. Health Canada is clear that painting a mouldy surface does not kill the mould or stop it returning. The moisture gets dealt with first, usually a bathroom fan that vents outside rather than into the attic. If the growth is into the board, that section gets replaced.
